Enlightenment Also known as the "Age of Reason," the Enlightenment is characterized by a belief in natural law and human reason. Rationalism and confidence in scientific methods influenced all disciplines during the eighteenth century, including history. Just as the Enlightenment helped to create the foundation of modern society, the fact-based, scientific notions of writing history that developed at that time have been followed into our own.
